Sunflower sessions is about community and celebrating the talent that comes from it. Sunday, KSN caught a version of one mans efforts to connect with his neighbors.
“The park was always empty,” said James Fleming, the organizer. “There was no one out there ever enjoying it. I just thought it would be great to create a music series that would get people out to enjoy the river and the park, but also I wanted to support local artists.”
Fleming recently moved to Riverside, and for him, this was an opportunity to connect with the community in a more personal way.
“You got to create community,” said Fleming. “People are spending an awful lot of time on their phones alone in isolation. Just wanted to get people out of their homes and away from their TV’s and away from their phones, meet their neighbors and continue to shine a light on the great lifestyle Wichita has to offer.”
Women Without Purses is one of the many bands that brought a new sound to Riverside and the dozens of people who came out to enjoy their music told KSN that this these weekly jam sessions have been one of the best things for their neighborhood.
“I love it,” said Niva Thiessen. “It makes it one more of the many reasons Riverside is a great place to live and next week we’re going to start Terrace of Botanica, which is another great Riverside thing.”
This is the first time Wichita got a taste of the Sunflower jam sessions but Fleming says, it won’t be the last. For more on the next event click here.
