Local high school prepares to hit the stage with Foreigner

WICHITA, Kansas - Come into the auditorium at Wichita West High School and you may luck out, hearing the show choir practice for their biggest performance of the year: hitting the stage with Foreigner on Saturday night.

It all started with the choir entering a video contest.

"I was thinking, 'ah, there's no way we're going to get this, but it's going to be fun, we have to just try,' and we're just all 'let's just do it,'" said senior John McCullough. "That's what we were thinking at that moment."

Then, they won. It was a great moment not just for them, but for their choir director.

"It's an awesome feeling. I'm really, really excited," said choir director Nick Franssen, "I'm a big fan of Foreigner, my wife is too, and just to be able to have these kids get an experience like that, one in a lifetime opportunities, just really, really great."

"I was sitting there at the table, and I got a message from one of my classmates and they said that they won," recalled Savannah McPherson, "and I just automatically like I started shaking and I was like oh my gosh, we won. I really think we didn't, I didn't think people thought we'd win so it was like a huge excitement."

Now, it's just a matter of ironing out any kinks and preparing to hit the stage with one of the world's best-selling bands of all time.

"This is definitely going to be like top 10 moment on my whole high school career," said McCullough. "It's just insane and a crazy opportunity that you never think you could get in a lifetime."

If you can't make it, the choir will also be appearing at Rusty Eck Ford in Wichita at 7310 E. Kellogg St, Wichita on Oct. 10.  They will be appearing as part of a promotion for the Ford Motor Company/Foreigner partnership that will bring attention to Ford's "Drive 4 UR School" program.

The choir will be arriving at 9 a.m. and staying until approximately 6 p.m. and performing a brief a cappella set and several Foreigner band members will be in attendance as well. Ford will also be matching the $500 donation to the choir and for every test drive that is taken on this day by the public at this dealership, Ford will donate an additional $20 to the choir up to a total amount of $6,000.
