WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The man charged with raping a four-year-old girl at the downtown YMCA was previously fired from another preschool in October.
This afternoon, officials with Plymouth Congregational Church have confirmed that 21-year-old Caleb Gaston was let go in October after a complaint of inappropriate touching with a preschooler.
Senior Minister Don Olson said Gaston was an employee for about six months at their learning center before the complaint was made and that Gaston was fired immediately afterward.
Olson said the Kansas Department of Health and Environment was notified after the incident. He said as a part of their licensing agreement they have to contact KDHE if there are any problems at the preschool so they can begin investigating immediately and contact law enforcement.
He said the background check was done on Gaston before he was hired at the learning center.
“Plymouth Learning Center does complete background checks through the state of Kansas in compliance with KDHE protocol,” explained Olson. “It’s actually carried out by KBI, we just inform them that we’ve hired this person and they do the background check for us.”
KSN is continuing to look into the alleged rape and why Gaston was able to get a job at the Y while being under investigation by another agency.
KSN’s Sara Berlinger spoke with KDHE officials and will have more coming up on KSN News at 10:00 p.m.
