Man hurt when firework explodes in southwest Wichita


A 43-year-old man was hurt after exploding a firework in southwest Wichita on Sunday. 

Authorities tell KSN a report of a possible explosion was called into dispatchers around 4:15 p.m. in the area of 31st and Glenn. Police responded.

“Travis Redd used the firework in a manner it wasn’t designed for to explode an item on the ground,” said officer Charley Davidson, Wichita Police Department. 

Police said fragments struck him in the chest. He was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and booked into jail for criminal use of explosives. He wasn’t listed in the jail Monday. 

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the bomb squad investigated.
