The Hoisington Police Department, the Barton County Sheriff’s Office, and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said they have found the body of 23-month-old Iviona Lewis in rural Barton County.
The girl was reported to be wearing only a diaper when she was last seen around 11 p.m. Sunday at a Hoisington home. She was reported missing on Tuesday. Many KSN viewers asked why it took so long for the girl to be reported missing.
“That is still being sorted out in the investigation. The interviews and why it took so long,” said Hoisington Police Chief Kenton Doze.
Multiple agencies searched door-to-door for the missing girl. According to the KBI, agents and officers worked through the night and made an arrest at approximately 7:30 a.m. Chaz Stephens, 25, of Hoisington, an acquaintance of Lewis, was arrested and booked into Barton County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder. Stephens is the boyfriend of Iviona’s mother according to authorities.
“Those charges may or may not change. It depends how the investigation continues,” said Chief Doze.
Once the autopsy is complete, formal charges will be filed by the Barton County Attorney’s office. The investigation is ongoing.
“We are waiting on KBI crime scene team to get here and process the scene,” added Chief Doze.
