Month after election, political signs litter Wichita streets

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Political signs are continuing to litter Wichita streets nearly a month after the 2016 election.

Leading up to the big day, people in Wichita couldn’t turn a corner without seeing campaign signs. They manned nearly every yard and every intersection in the city.

On Wednesday, KSN drove around the city to see if the political signs had been removed. A majority of the signs were gone, however KSN found several dozen “Vote No Activist Judges” signs still placed in people’s yards and on public property.

“We already have a president, right? We already have our politicians, so let’s get on with it,” said Wichita resident Robert Jackson.

“It’s just kind of annoying. It’s a nuisance,” said Wichita resident Tyler Haefele.

According to city ordinance, political signs located on private property must be removed within seven days following the election. The ordinance also says signs cannot be put on public property. Public property includes the area from sidewalk to sidewalk, including the grassy strip, on both sides of all streets throughout the city. If the city locates signs placed on public property city crews have the right to remove and impound the signs.

KSN asked the city on Wednesday why it has not removed the political signs from public property.

The city’s sign supervisor said he and his crews would love to remove the signs, but they can’t. He said there is a verbiage error in the city sign ordinance that will not allow them to remove the signs even if they are illegally placed for an extended amount of time.

The supervisor said the city has rewritten the sign ordinance to allow them to remove the signs. The new verbiage is nearing the start of the approval process and should be complete in the next few weeks, according to the supervisor.

KSN also reached out to the group behind the “Vote No Activist Judges” signs about why they have not removed their signs. KSN has not heard back.
