A 17-year-old boy is in the hospital after being shot in the leg. The incident happened near an East Harry apartment complex around 12:30 on Sunday.
WPD is still investigating the incident but told KSN the gun shot went off outside of the apartment unit. The victim may have been visiting friends at the time because police also confirmed he does not live in the area.
“I’ve been doing this for 22 years, and there hasn’t been a year that’s gone by where we don’t have individuals who fall victims to these types of incidents,” said Sergeant Dan Brinkley, with the Wichita Police Department.
This shooting comes on the heels of three fatal shootings just a day prior. One of those shootings happened on the 1500 block of Water Street, where a man was shot to death while sitting in his car.
KSN went to the Water Street location Sunday afternoon and though the neighborhood was quiet, some that live in the area say the Gentleman’s Club on the corner attracts a lot of negative attention.
“I’ve been here since the 60’s and my wife has been here her whole life,” explained neighbor, Ron Margolis. “Happens everywhere; it’s not only this neighborhood. We have a lot more problems than we used to but it’s not only our neighborhood.”
Margolis says his granddaughter lives next to the Gentleman’s Club and she noticed there were larger crowds in the area Saturday night, just hours before the fatal shooting.
“That club there doesn’t help, but this isn’t about the neighborhood, it’s about the way the city is changing,” said Margolis. “Every morning you turn the news on, they tell you there was a robbery, shooting a mugging, we’re just getting to be a big city I guess, and we’re getting all the problems of a big city.”
