A second Sedgwick County Commissioner is on record with KSN, saying there is an FBI investigation into several of the commissioners.
“I can tell you it’s not me. I’m not part of the investigation other than answering questions,” said Commissioner Jim Howell.
Howell does confirm he has answered questions of FBI investigators.
“Yes, I have,” said Howell. “I don’t want to harm what’s being investigated so I guess it would be wise not to comment on that right now. But their timeline and how exactly they move forward is really up to them. I don’t want to cause any problems. It’s been going on probably most of the month of October.”
The FBI is conducting an investigation involving the Sedgwick County Commission, multiple sources tell KSN.
Richard Ranzau went on record with KSN Monday confirming the investigation.
“Right now, we have an FBI investigation,” said Richard Ranzau, Sedgwick County Commission, 4th District.
Ranzau would not comment on camera about the possible scope of any investigation.
“Well, the investigation needs to pan out, and we’ll see what it shows and see what happens after that,” said Ranzau. “I understand people want more information, but we’re at a time where we can’t say too much, publicly, at this point with an ongoing investigation.”
KSN reached out to the regional FBI office out of Kansas City. A spokesperson said they will neither confirm nor deny any possible investigation.
KSN reached out to all Sedgwick County Commissioners. Two said they had not been contacted by the FBI. Another commissioner said he understood an FBI investigation was underway but would not say more.
Commission Chair David Dennis did not want to speak about an investigation but did talk about his priorities for county government.
“I have two goals for our county, and it’s been my goal all along. First of all, we need to manage the county for 500,000 citizens who we’ve got here to the best of our ability. And second is to protect my staff,” said Dennis.
Michael O’Donnell has been charged in federal court with wire fraud and money laundering, relating to alleged misuse of campaign funds. He said he has not been contacted by the FBI about any new investigation. It’s also not known if the FBI is investigating anything relating to that federal case involving O’Donnell.
Van Williams, Director of Strategic Communications for Sedgwick County, did not talk on camera but said if there was an investigation into county personnel, the county would not comment on personnel issues.
KSN will continue to follow this story and bring details as they become available.
