New family park for Wichita's Fabrique neighborhood by fall

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - A Wichita neighborhood will have a new addition and look come fall. Project leaders say a new addition in the Fabrique neighborhood will promote outdoor recreation.

The area includes about 1,200 homes. Homes here were built in 1940s and 50s with no provisions for green space or a place 5-year-old Kairi can play.

"It would be kind of cool if we had a park over here," said Kairi.

But Kairi won't have to wait much longer. The Fabrique Neighborhood Association voted on a park as their project of the year.

"This is for as a gathering place, our mini park, so we've incorporated two tables," said David Robbins, Fabrique Neighborhood Association President.

Swings, a climbing rock, barbecue grills, picnic tables and much more will be part of the project that's supported by a $100,000 grant from Hyatt funds. Robbins says children do come to this grassy space, but all they can do is play near the drainage ditch.

"They are using this area, but there's just nothing here for them to take advantage of," said Robbins.

District 3 Councilman James Clendenin says this will change that. He says they did a safety check of the area, and improvements will be put up to make it safe. He hopes the project brings other families to the neighborhood, and lets neighbors know the city cares about their home.

"Attracting young families to this area to buy homes and own and keep this area nice is important," said James Clendenin, Wichita City Council District 3.

The swings and everything in this project is expected to be up and running by fall and the city's Park and Recreation Department is putting it up and is overseeing the park.
