If you are a grandparent, aunt or uncle, imagine taking on the role of parent again. It may be years since you’ve cared for a child, attended a parent teacher conference, or attended a soccer game. It’s why one local woman is starting a group for parenting again.
Cindy Miles says after years of being empty nesters, she and her husband took kinship placement of several grandchildren.
They soon realized how much they needed to learn about parenting again, and today hope they can help new parents, like Lynn Ackerson.
“This is where I live with my granddaughter Gracie who I have had in my home since April, and we’re having a good time together,” said Lynn Ackerson, Wichita.
Lynn Ackerson says becoming a parent for her 10-year-old grand-daughter Gracie has been a joy. She enjoys learning something new about her everyday.
“This is what Gracie wrote that would be a recipe for friendship,” said Ackerson.
Ackerson says although it’s great company, the new responsibility comes with its challenges.
“Trying to get ready for work, and have a diabetic child to look after, there were so many things that I hadn’t dealt with in a long time,” said Ackerson.
She says Cindy Miles, who she met through a mutual friend, became her saving grace. She was able to learn about resources in the community for Gracie, like the Kansas Children Service League and relate to a person with a similar experience. Ackerson says she is excited to be one of the first members of Cindy’s Parenting Again Club.
“We still have a lot of people that are raising kids again and we got to support them, we got to realize that parenting again, it’s not easy,” said Cindy Miles, Parenting Again Club Founder.
Cindy says the first meeting is this Saturday where they will talk about topics and do activities to get to know other families. She encourages anyone with an interest to attend and hopes it grows into a non-profit organization one day.
“Just kind of networking, getting to know one another, creating that support system around those people who are raising kids again,” said Miles.
The club will meet Saturday from 5 to 8 pm at Bethel Life Center and there is no cost involved…if you are interested in signing up, click here.
