New Save-A-Lot grocery store opens in south Wichita

Local

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A south Wichita neighborhood will now have access to affordable and fresh food. The Save-A-Lot grocery store opened early Wednesday morning at Harry and Broadway.

Several years ago, a Dillons store in that location closed. It required people in the area to have to travel further for affordable produce and other groceries. This led to the area receiving a designation as a food desert.

When the new store opened, dozens lined up to buy their everyday staples.

“Very excited. I got tired of walking around Walmart all the time for my groceries or driving clear across town. This is a good thing for our community here,” said Kathlyn Thompson, customer. “This is really a good thing. I think it will build the economy here in this little community.”

“Glad to see something come back to the neighborhood. It has been a long time,” said Dean Weakley, customer.

The Save-A-Lot store is operated by a group of veterans called Honor Capital.
