New shooting range opens in El Dorado

Local

The sounds of a gun range open for business.

“Get in a little practice on the gun range,” said Steve Gillis, a patron.

I can see my whole family coming out here every weekend shooting and having a lot of fun,” said Liam Pelnar, another patron.

The El Dorado State Park Shooting Range is a $2.3 million dollar facility with 56 shooting lanes and range safety officers.

“We’re very proud of it, I’m glad that I’m able to help people and maintain safety on the range at all times,” said Sam Langhofer, Safety Range Officer .

A safe place to practice the sport that some nearby residents protested fearing the sounds of a gun range would rob them of peace and quiet.

The owners of this yard sign wouldn’t talk on camera but told me the sign still reflects how they feel.

For others, it’s not a big deal.

“You can hear more from people hunting duck and deer season than you can from the gun range, ” said Karla Whitfield. “So it doesn’t bother us.”

Staff with the shooting range say they brought in sound engineers to help minimize noise.

“We want to be good neighbors to them,” said John Grange, President of the Friends of El Dorado Shooting Board.

“The opening on that gun range is going straight into a wide open field, and it’s not directed toward us at all or even straight down the street they did a great job,” said Whitfield.
