Newton family of 8 loses home, belongings in fire

It was a call Delania Taylor never expected while at a school event with her husband and six young children.

Her landlord’s wife called and asked if the family was okay.

“Our youngest daughter had open heart surgery in March, so I thought maybe she just caught wind of some of the struggles we were going through. I said, ‘Yeah we’re fine,’ and she said your house is on fire,” Taylor said.

The family returned to their home on east 11th street as fire crews battled the blaze.

“Everything we own is in that house,” Taylor said.

Taylor and her husband, Brandon, have six children ranging in age from five to 11 years old.

They are getting some assitance from the Red Cross and their landlord’s family gifted them back their deposit plus snacks and toys for the children, but they still need beds, dressers, furniture, dishes and toiletries.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
