Newton standoff ends peacefully

NEWTON, Kan. (KSNW) – The suspect in the Newton standoff has surrendered, ending the standoff peacefully.

Police say the incident started at 5:30 a.m. in the 400 block of East 7th Street.

Just after 11 a.m., the suspect in the standoff walked out with his hands up and was taken into custody.

The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office says two children were safely evacuated from the resident prior to the surrender.

Officers say one person suffered minor injuries in an altercation with the suspect before police were called.

They say the suspect was armed with a handgun at one point and that alcohol played a role in leading up to police being called to the home.

The suspect is being held at the Harvey County Detention Center.
