Armored vehicles, officers with rifles and a heavy police presence blocked the road near the Department for Children and Families building early Tuesday afternoon after reports of a man firing a gun in a nearby field.
“They got everything blocked,” says Mary Baker.” “I have a sister and a brother that live over there.”
The DCF building went into immediate lockdown which sits close to an apartment complex.
“You want to make sure that they are okay,” says Baker.
That’s where Baker’s brother and sister live. She waited anxiously to hear from them.
“Try to call them and hope someone picks up the phone,” she says. “Wait it out.”
Sheriff Jeff Easter says once the suspect pointed the gun at approaching officers the deputy shot the man. He says the man was drunk, homeless. The man is in the hospital in serious condition. Easter says there is no longer a threat but will be investigating to see if any bullets struck the DCF building.
“We don’t know if there was any specific target that he was looking at or anything like that,” says Easter.
