Officials arrest suspect in fatal shooting near Valley Center

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said one man is dead and another is in custody after a shooting this weekend. It happened Sunday around 3 a.m. in the 8300 block of 94th Street West.

Deputies arrived and found 22-year-old James L. Rotramel with gunshot wounds. A second victim, 20-year-old Kristopher Hooper, was taken to a local hospital by private vehicle and was treated for a gunshot wound. Rotramel died at the hospital around 4:30 a.m.

Deputies located a suspect who was transported to the sheriff’s office.

After interviews, deputies arrested 36-year-old Michael L. Phillips. He is facing charges of alleged first-degree murder, aggravated battery, and two counts of aggravated assault with use of a deadly weapon.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department said the victim and suspect are brothers, and the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute.
