Old Town Wichita is shining a little brighter tonight after Mayor Jeff Longwell held his annual Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting & Lights on the River Sunday.

The event kicked off at the Wichita Boathouse at 4:00 p.m. There, locals enjoyed winter wagon rides, a s’mores station, a dj and a variety of food trucks and vendors.

Trolleys later took attendees to Old Town Square for the tree lighting.

Christmas carolers performed holiday classics leading up to the lighting. And just after, Santa Claus made an unexpected visit and waved to the crowd from atop a nearby building.

It was an event that brought family and friends together.

“Oh I love it!” said Rhonda Doll. “We love this time of year and it’s a lot of fun to just be able to do it with the family.”

Following the lighting ceremony festivities continued at the Wichita Boathouse including the River Launce on the Ark River and a fireworks show.
