One person injured after vehicle and train collide in Derby

DERBY, Kan. (KSNW) – One person is in serious condition after a their Ford Festiva was struck by a train Thursday night. The crash happened around 7:50 p.m.

Sgt. Michael Littleton with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said the person in the vehicle was taken to a local hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

“If you were to ask me, anytime a train takes on a car and you walk away from it, it’s luck, definitely,” said Sgt. Littleton.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. However, the vehicle was hit by the train near the intersection of Red Powell Drive and K-15 and dragged by the train along the tracks.

Traffic at Red Powell Drive is being redirected while authorities continue to investigate and inspect the train tracks.

“We still have a lot of people to talk to, obviously we still have to get with the railroad company they have to come check the tracks, make sure we don’t have any derailments,” explained Sgt. Littleton.
