WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Wichita police are investigating the theft of wheels and tires off of vehicles around the Wichita area.
On Wednesday, at approximately 11:30 a.m., a victim exited the Towne East Square to find two wheels missing off their Chevy Suburban.
KSN spoke with the victim, who wanted to remain anonymous.
“I was in and out of the mall in within 30 minutes, so in that time frame, between 11:15ish and 11:45, that’s when it happened,” she said.
The victim says she got into her car, started it, and was about to drive off when she realized something wasn’t right.
“My passenger tires and rims were gone, so I called 911, and asked them to send out an officer,” she said.
After some research, police found eight cases of wheels/tires, tail lights, or truck tailgates being stolen in the last six months.
Police said most vehicles appear to be Chevrolet.
As for the victim, she says the incident is a cause for concern.
“Of course, I mean if people are going to go out in the middle of the day and not care whose around and do stuff like this and take things off people’s vehicles,” she said.
KSN reached out to the mall security, but they said they couldn’t comment about the case.
We received this statement from the General Manager of the Towne East Square saying:
“While we take the recent incident very seriously, we want to reassure our shoppers that incidents of this nature are rare.”
A witness to Wednesday’s crime said they saw it, but it looked like they were just changing a tire. If you see anybody removing car parts at Towne East please call 911 or Towne East Square security at 316-686-9111.
