WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting Wednesday in west Wichita. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) arrived to investigate.

Around 1:30 a.m., Wichita police officers were dispatched to a shooting in the 500 block of N. Milstead St., near 119th Street West and Central.

Officers arrived and found a woman and a child in the front yard.

“As officers were on scene speaking to the female, they witnessed a male run into the residence with a gun in his hand,” officer Chad Ditch, Wichita Police Department, said. “At this point, the adult female would inform officers that there were other individuals still inside the residence. The officers confirmed at that time that there was nobody shot. A short time later, the other individuals that were inside the residence would exit the residence.”

SWAT entered the home around 10:30 a.m., and an exchange of gunfire left the suspect dead. There were no other injuries were reported.

According to Ditch, there had been a verbal altercation with the suspect inside the home, and the suspect fired a shot at one of the people in the home. Ditch said the suspect and the residents of the home were “known to each other,” but the exact relationship is not known at this time.

Ditch said the suspect is a 39-year-old man who is wanted on an aggravated kidnapping warrant. That warrant is not related to this incident.

A couple of the houses in the neighborhood were evacuated, and Milstead was blocked at 119th Street.
