Pratt shooting survivor: ‘I was just scared for my life’

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Alex Deaton, the man wanted for a crime spree across several states, is still behind bars.

Now, KSN News is hearing from the victim, Riley Juel, who details how the shooting at a Pratt convenience store unfolded.

“I was just scared for my life,” said Juel.

Riley said he has been working at the Kwik Shop for two months and Wednesday started out like any other day.

Juel said the suspect, Alex Deaton, walked into the store and came directly up to the counter.

“I did get that one feeling that something wasn’t right,” said Juel.

He said Deaton didn’t ask for money, and instead, he just asked for the keys to Juel’s car.

Juel said he calmly walked over to his jacket and got his keys and gave them to Deaton. That’s when, he said Deaton pulled his gun again and shot him at point-blank range in the stomach.

“As soon as I handed him my keys, he pulled it on me again and just shot me.” said Juel.

Juel says he was alert enough to grab his cell phone and call 911, letting police know what happened.

While his actions helped authorities eventually track down and catch Deaton, he isn’t taking any credit.

“I don’t feel like a hero, because I didn’t personally stop the guy, the hero is the cops that got him,” said Juel.

Juel, who prides himself on his fighting spirit and being loyal to both his friends and family, had a message for the man who shot him.

“I’m not mad at the guy, I know that is kind of surprising, but I’m not that kind of person that can just keep anger inside, you always have to forgive someone for what they’ve done, no matter what it was,” said Juel.

He was transported to Via Christi St. Francis, where he is currently recovering.

Juel has remained upbeat, even laughing and joking at times.  He says this helps him take his mind off everything he’s gone through in just the past day.

KSN asked if he had a message for his friends that can’t come visit him.

He simple said that he knows everyone is thinking about him, he appreciates it and he wants to thank all his friends for being a part of his life.

No word on when Juel will be released from the hospital.
