The death of an inmate at the Sedgwick County Detention Facility may have been because of self-inflicted asphyxiation, officials say.
An inmate was found unresponsive in his cell Friday night at 6:40 p.m.
The inmate was pronounced deceased at 7:16 p.m. after being treated by emergency medical services and transported to the Sedgwick County Coroner’s Office to determine the exact cause of death.
This was the first in-custody death of 2019. Since 2016, there have been 143 suicide attempts in the Sedgwick County Detention Facility.
