Going into Thursday evening, Donald Spence had one goal for his performance.
“Just not embarrassing myself and everyone else,” Spence laughed, “this is my first experience with anything like this.”
Spence and fellow residents from the LakePoint Wichita retirement community have been practicing a choreographed dance to “Jingle Bell Rock” for weeks, in a LakePoint tradition. The group calls themselves the Rocking Chair Rockettes.
“We’ve practiced everyday. I’ve done this two or three or four years, its fun to sit in a chair and dance,” Twila Ellis said.
Vickie Strawder and several other LakePoint employees taught residence the routine and performed it alongside Wichita State dance students at the Wilner Auditorium on campus. Students were having an end-of-the-year recital and the Rocking Chair Rockettes received an ovation by the crowd.
“It brings smiles to everyone…just the joy of making people smile,” Patti Lagers said.
