Shots fired at Great Bend officer; car being sought

GREAT BEND, Kan. (KSNW) – Great Bend police are looking for the occupants of a vehicle that allegedly fired shots at an officer. It happened Wednesday evening around 9 p.m.

Police said the officer was exiting the police department when he observed a dark-colored passenger car driving northbound on Williams Street in front of the building.

The officer noticed a person hang out of the passenger window.

“Somebody from the passenger’s side held what appeared to be an assault rifle type weapon over the roof of the car out over the window, and fired off probably around a dozen, maybe even a little bit more, rounds,” said police chief Cliff Couch.

He said the officer did not return fire on the vehicle.

“This was obviously a very dangerous situation, whether the weapon used turns out to be real or not. I’m proud that the officer in this incident showed such restraint, but not all situations turn out that way,” said Couch.

KSN’s Amanda Aguilar spoke to the Barton County sheriff, who called the individual “lucky,” saying it’s not always likely an officer makes that kind of call.

“If the officer had just seen the weapon and not heard the report, he may have very well thought that his life was in danger and about to be shot, and may have opened fire,” said Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

The sheriff didn’t hold back his thoughts on the act.

He said, “It’s incredibly stupid.”

The heads of law enforcement are warning others it could have ended in a tragedy.

“Whether it was some kids that thought they were playing a funny prank or whether it was something more nefarious,” said Couch. “Regardless, it’s an extremely dangerous situation.”
