Sneak Peak: Wichita’s new Advanced Learning Library

We are getting a new look inside the city’s new Advanced Learning Library.

A decade of planning and a year and a half of construction is what it took to create the new library. Of course, not everything is finished just yet.

There are still chairs and tables to be put in place, and soon the moving process from the old library to the new will begin.

“After we close for business on the 6th of May we will immediately be suspending the book drop service,” explained Cynthia Berner, Director of Libraries. “We’ll have the book drop open at this location, we’ll have it at all of our other locations as well.”

Among the amenities are a new section for technology, a new children’s pavilion, an area for local history and genealogy, and even a cafe. The more than 105,000 square feet offer numerous opportunities to Wichita residents.

“We’ll create something like a stage so we can use the concrete seating area to do outdoor storytime or children can come and act out their own activities,” added Berner.

The current library will close at 5:00 p.m. Sunday May 6. The new library doesn’t have an exact opening date yet, but staff say we can expect one soon.
