After the Christmas decorations in Haysville were damaged by vandals, a Wichita man took it upon himself to fix them.
Now, each piece is back in its place just days ahead of the Village Christmas Celebration.
“It’s great to know there are people out there in this world that still care and wanna make things good for Christmas and the kids,” said John Gibson, Haysville Pride Member.
The man responsible for the repairs is Wayne Schubert.
Schubert has been a handyman for decades and saw the original story about the vandalism on KSN and wanted to help bring the decorations back to life.
“When I was putting the stuff back together, I thought of the little kids,” Schubert said. “And how much fun they would have.”
Schubert used wood strips to put the broken pieces back together.
“I took some wood strips and turned the pieces upside down and then put these wood strips like splints on the backside and screwed them on there so they’d stabilize the pieces that were broken,” Schubert said.
Schubert left his business card attached to one of the pieces afterward just in case, but didn’t care if he was ever recognized for his hard work.
“I really didn’t think it was any big deal,” Schubert said. “Not at all.”
Now as you walk into the park, you can feel the Christmas cheer again, something those in Haysville are thankful for.
“Merry Christmas,” said Schubert. “Have a lot of fun down there and I’m glad that things are back together for them.”
The Haysville Pride members and other city workers also helped repair some of the decorations and added some new things to the display.
The Village Christmas Celebration will be on Saturday (Dec. 1) from 4:00-9:00 p.m. at W.W. Hays Village Historic Park at 200 S. Main Street in Haysville.
Organizers said they expect thousands of people to attend.
