Students give back for Operation Holiday

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – This week, Operation Holiday had some extra sets of helping hands to get things organized ahead of distribution beginning on Thursday.

“It means 120 hands on in an organized effort to get the monotonous tasks like pre-bagging 900 elder care bags,” said Ashley Davis with Operation Holiday.

Wilbur Middle School students were at the headquarters Tuesday and Wednesday to help out. They organized food and clothing and also helped sort toys with the Marines for Toys for Tots. Maycee James, a 7th grader, said she felt like helping out and volunteering is a great way to spend time and something that young people should be involved with.

“I think it’s a great thing for people, especially young kids in our community because everybody is so involved with technology now, these days, they need to realize the real world is still out there,” she said while standing in front of food she helped set up for distribution. “Giving back, doing something as simple as skipping school for half a day just to do this really just brings you together and back into what’s really in perspective of what’s important.”

Even in the midst of everything coming in, officials with Operation Holiday still say that things are behind.

“We are still well down on our canned food drive,” said Davis. “Last minute contributions are welcome, we will take them up through distribution. I’ll still have people coming in next week saying I missed it, my circumstances changed, is there anything you can do for me?”

Davis says bins will continue to be out at Dillons for pick up throughout the weekend. Operation Holiday says they generally see between 11,000 and 15,000 people apply to receive help, this year, they estimate around 12,000 people have gone through the system.
