Hundreds of supporters lined the streets of the Wichita Chisholm Trail Marathon route to cheer on the runners.
“Our daughter is running in the marathon,” said David Major, spectator. “So, we’re cheering for her.”
Hundreds of fans and supporters woke up before sunrise on Sunday to stand on the sidelines as the runners gave their all in the inagural marathon.
“We love watching runs like this,” said Bill Mason, spectator.
“[My daughter] has been working real hard and has been running with some gorups and has a coach and runs lots of miles a week,” said Major. “She’s worked real hard for this marathon. We’re excited for her.”
While many of the spectators had a special someone they were rooting for, others just came to show support for everyone.
“Just seeing the people and cheering,” said Mason. “It’s always fun to see the really fast people at first, but we kind of like staying there for the slower people that are toward the back.”
The supporters varied in ages.
“It’s pretty cool,” said Katherine Frederick. “It’s fun to look at the medals and see who won and stuff.”
The spectators say it’s this type of support that they know the runners need and they want to give it their all, some with signs and others who recorded the memories.
“A lot of times, we’ve gotten thank you’s and they appreciate someone’s out there rooting,” said Mason.
Many of the spectators are hoping to see the event again next year. They say if it does go on, they will be back on the sidelines cheering on the runners.
