WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – U.S. Marshals were attempting to arrest a man on a murder warrant when shots were exchanged.
According to police, the situation started around 12:45 p.m. in the 1000 block of South Ellis Street. U.S. Marshals were looking for a man wanted for a murder warrant out of Florida. The suspect and another woman fled in a car, and it crashed into a home in the 600 block of South Ellis. Both individuals fled.
“The male suspect was approached by officers in the area of Kellogg and Hydraulic, and upon approaching the suspect, he did inflict one gunshot wound to himself,” said Officer Charley Davidson, Wichita Police Department. “That individual has been taken to an area hospital in critical condition.”
Police are still searching for the woman in that car.
Right now, there are several areas blocked off around Kellogg between Hydraulic and Ellis as police investigate.
Police are interviewing several witnesses. Officials said the crime scene is contained, and individuals living in that area should not be alarmed.
“We were not involved in locating the suspect, the U.S. marshals were involved in locating the suspect, but after the incident occurred, we began to assist them,” said Davidson.
There were no injuries to the U.S. Marshals, and police officers that responded to the shooting.
