Suspect in custody after allegedly shooting toddler near Cheney Lake, Reno County Sheriff’s Office releases information

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A toddler has been rushed to the hospital after a shooting at Cheney Lake over the noon hour on Monday. The Reno County sheriff says it started with an abduction out of Wichita.

He says a man abducted a mother and her children from Wichita and took them to Cheney Lake. At some point, there was an altercation, and the mother tried to flee with her children in a car.

The sheriff says the man fired shots at the vehicle, hitting the toddler.

“She was trying to get away. She noticed that the child was injured and was trying to get to safety,” said Reno County Sheriff Darrian Campbell.

The victim is two years old, and she was shot in the back while in a car seat. The child was taken to Wesley Medical Center where she underwent surgery. She is in critical condition.

The alleged shooter was taken into in custody after the sheriff said several agencies worked to find him.

“The aircraft guided officers on the ground to the suspect. They were able to see him. He came out of the wooded area and walked back in or something like that. They took him into custody,” said Campbell.

He has been identified as Kamden Campos. Campos was arrested on suspicion of four counts of attempted murder, aggravated kidnapping, and possession of stolen property. His bond is set at more than $2 million. He is being held in the Reno County Jail.

Sheriff Campbell said the suspect and the woman knew each other.

The Sedgwick and Reno County Sheriff’s Offices are assisting in the investigation.

For those who live in the area where the manhunt took place, it was too close for comfort. Around 1 p.m., officers narrowed the search for their suspect not far from Cheney Reservoir.

“And they said there was a suspect, armed and dangerous, and to go back inside and lock up and stay in there until they came,” said Danette Door, who witnessed the manhunt in her backyard.

Door said she armed herself, locked her doors, and watched her backyard from her windows as cops searched.

Neighbors armed themselves when they heard what was happening from officers telling them to be on the lookout.

“Said they had him located, and he was trying to backtrack. He was on our neighbor’s property,” said Charles Breightenbach, another person who witnessed the manhunt.

Breightenbach watched the manhunt unfold along his back pasture, in disbelief at what officers were telling him.

“I just, if anybody can say prayers for the little girl,” he added.

Just before 2 p.m., law enforcement officials were able to get the suspect out of Door’s back pasture. Neighbors said they are happy it’s over and praying for the victims as officers say cooperation helped in the search to find the suspect.
