Update: 51 students injured in bus crash, 1 student transported

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Wichita police say two school buses with 89 students on board were involved in an accident. It happened around 11:20 a.m. Thursday on eastbound Kellogg near I-135.

The students were from L’Ouverture Computer Technology Magnet Elementary School. They were part of the Young People’s Concert at Century II and were returning to the school.

At a Friday morning press briefing, police said 51 students reported minor injuries. At least one student was transported to the hospital. Six teachers were on board and five of them received minor injures. Both bus drivers were not hurt. Initially, police said 27 students received minor injuries and 60 were on board the bus.

David Wills was riding in one of those buses when it slammed into the other bus.

“It was scary because like most of the students went flying forward,” said Wills.

David’s mom, Valerie, received a call that no parent wants.

“It kind of freaks you out, it is kind of scary, I was really worried about him,” said Valerie. “Then, EMS called and said that they had looked over him and that he was doing okay.”

Police said the accident happened because traffic was backed up. They said the first bus slowed down, and the second bus rear-ended the first bus.

“The totality, it could have been much worse, but those kids that were injured are being treated, thankfully, their injuries weren’t worse,” said Sgt. Kelly O’Brien, Wichita Police Department.

It is a sentiment shared by parents like Wills.

“I’m just glad that he is okay and that they called so soon and let us know and kept us updated throughout.”

Sgt. O’Brien said they worked to be very pro-active on notifying the parents of the children. He said police, EMS, and school officials made sure parents were informed of what happened, the conditions of the students, and to go to the school to pick up their children.
