UPDATE: Man killed in Marion County officer-involved shooting,

MARION COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) – Authorities in the Marion County town of Lehigh are investigating an officer-involved shooting. It happened around 6 p.m. Tuesday in the 400 block of East Maria.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a domestic incident involving a relative who had access to firearms.

According to the KBI, preliminary information indicates that shortly after arriving, officers observed an armed man moving from the home to a large outbuilding. At that time, responding officers from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the Marion Police Department, and the Hillsboro Police Department surrounded the outbuilding. Approximately 15 minutes later, the man emerged from the building with his firearm. He was given commands by authorities to drop his gun and did not comply. Shots were fired by an officer at the scene.

EMS was then called to the location and pronounced the man dead. He has since been identified as 50-year-old Robb Stewart. Stewart lived at the home.

No law enforcement officers were injured, however, an officer was transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure. The officer has since been released.

The KBI will complete a thorough and independent investigation into this matter. Once completed, the findings will be turned over to the Marion County Attorney for review.

A rare happening in Lehigh.

“It’s like what the heck is going on,” says Caden Friesen. “It is unusual for this town to see so many lights around and all this chaos.”

Officers still on scene a day after law enforcement from several agencies responded to a call at this home on Maria Street of a possible domestic situation.

“We have had no calls here in the past 2-3 years and nothing before here that anybody can recall,” says Sheriff Robert Craft.

Now law enforcement investigating what led up to an officer involved shooting.

“There was some disagreements but I don’t know that that led to this,” says Craft.

“I don’t know it just kind of sets people off a little bit,” says Friesen.

Officers and deputies were alerted to the home shortly before 6:30 and confronted the man now identified as Robb Stewart, as he made his way from the home to an outbuilding behind his house. Minutes later Sheriff Craft says he came out with a gun.

Craft says he was told to drop the gun, but, instead, pointed the gun at officers.

He was shot in the doorway and shortly after pronounced dead.

“Unusual,” says Friesen.

That’s how Caden Friesen describes this.

He was on his way to see his mom last night when he saw the commotion of lights and officers. He says most people know each other here, but he didn’t know Robb Stewart or the family. For him, it’s a sight he says he never thought he’d see, and hopes not to again.
