WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Authorities said the marmoset monkey that was loose on the Wichita State University campus has died.
Beba escaped at about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, at Lot 10 near the Corbin Education Center.
It all started at Tuesday’s basketball game when a woman said Beba wanted to join her at the game after escaping.
“He had the monkey on a harness sometimes, didn’t in this case, got out of the car, and ended up being friendly like it was on the shoulder of a woman going to a basketball game,” said Joe Kleinsasser, WSU Strategic Communications.
School officials said Beba escaped again and was missing throughout the night.
The monkey was found by a WSU employee outside Eck Stadium. Beba was brought inside to try to warm it up, but she was unresponsive.
The Wichita State University Police Department and the owner were notified. The owner took the monkey to a veterinarian, where she was pronounced dead.
Wichita State policy states that all domestic animals must be leashed on campus. Monkeys aren’t included on the list.
KSN asked officials if the student will face any discipline for having the monkey.
“I think that is a conversation we will have another time,” said Kleinsasser.
Wichita Animal Control policy states it is illegal to own a pet monkey in Wichita. Law enforcement said they likely won’t pursue any punishment because the monkey died.
