Update: Young woman dead after accidental shooting in northeast Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Wichita police said a 16-year-old woman died after a shooting in northeast Wichita.

It happened around 2:20 a.m. Saturday in the 1300 block of North Erie.

When police arrived at the home, they found a woman had died from an apparent gun shot wound.

After interviewing several witnesses, police said the woman accidentally shot herself.

Prior to the shooting, several teens were playing with a shotgun in the basement of the home. Police said the gun belonged to someone living in the home.

“There aren’t any charges being brought against anyone,” said Lt. Jason Stephens, Wichita Police Department. “We no longer have a statute that covers the proper securing of weapons anymore.”

Right now, police aren’t releasing the identity of the young woman. The young woman did not live in the home. She was visiting with a friend.

KSN did take a closer look at Kansas Statute, and we contacted the legislative research department that led us to this statute from 2012.

It says — “No city or county shall adopt any ordinance, resolution or regulation, and no agent of any city or county shall take any administrative action, governing the purchase, transfer, ownership, storage or transporting of firearms or ammunition.”
