Watch Live: Sedgwick County Commission meeting


WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The Sedgwick County Commission held a meeting Sept. 9.

  • A proclamation declaring September 6-12, 2020 as Suicide Prevention Week was adopted.
  • Commissioners received Sedgwick County Suicide Prevention Coalition’s 2019 Suicide Data Report.
    • There were 94 suicide deaths in Sedgwick County in 2019.
    • Locally, COMCARE is available for support. The 24/7 suicide prevention hotline is (316) 660-7500.
  • Governor’s Executive Order (EO) No. 20-59 was discussed. The EO will not apply within Sedgwick County.
  • There was a discussion of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
    • Sedgwick County has spent about $14.9 million on COVID-related expenses since the beginning of March.
      • Of that total, $10.4 million has been spent from the County’s direct allocation of CARES funding from the Federal government, and $2.8 million has been spent from the County’s allocation of CARES funding from the State of Kansas.
    • Applications for the safe operating grants for businesses are due by September 11. More information is available here.
    • Applications from Public Health and Social Services are due by September 20. Commissioners are expected to review and make recommendations on September 23.
  • Commissioners delay approval of four tandem axle dump trucks equipped with salt/sand spreader and liquid anti-icing and de-icing systems for one week.

Governing Body of Fire District 1

  • Commissioners approved one temporary construction easement and one road right-of-way dedication adjacent to Fire Station 37 in Bel Aire.
