Technology is helping parents track their child’s school bus. The Wichita School District launched an app called FirstView on Tuesday.
The Wichita School District hosted a demonstration Tuesday to show how the app works. A school bus departed Coleman Middle School at 1:47 p.m. Lisa Riveros who is the transportation director for the district was able to track the bus thanks to the app.
“This right here is the view of the parent app from the parent’s perspective,” said Riveros while pointing at the app interface shown on a projector screen. “What the parent will see is their child’s school, they’ll also see the bus in motion in real time.”
School officials said the app updates about every 15 seconds.
“From the parents perspective, they are able to see that the student departed the school at 1:47 p.m. in this case, and their estimated time of arrival home is 2:07 p.m.,” said Riveros.
Parents can also get alerts about major delays or issues. Real time updates that school officials believe gives parents a peace of mind.
“I mainly track it in the morning because as soon as my youngest gets on the bus I go to work.” said Kari Filippi, a parent who uses the app. “So it just helps me a little bit better on planning my morning.”
“We’ll have 40 or 50 students to get on a bus and that way they don’t have to stand out there in the heat or the cold we can tell them exactly here it comes,” said Karen Waterman Overgaard, Assistant Principal at Coleman Middle School.
The app can also notify parents when their child’s bus is near.
“It’ll just push notification to the parents saying hey your bus is about two miles away,” said Riveros. “Or they can do the push notification according to time so they know if their child is going to arrive home five minutes or ten minutes how ever they customize it to them.”
Parents who have multiple children riding different buses can monitor them all in the app.
“On this same map view, it will have multiple schools,” said Riveros. “And then they’ll have their other students listed below so they can monitor all of their kids,”
