Wichitans displaced after apartment catches fire

Multiple people are without a home this memorial weekend after a fire broke out at a Wichita apartment complex overnight.

The fire happened sometime overnight in the 800 block of S. Emporia.

KSN has been reaching out to fire officials to find out the cause of that fire.

One college student who lives in the apartment complex says she returned home Sunday morning to her building being taped off.

She says she moved into the building just two weeks ago. She was told a moped caught fire and went up and over the front of the structure.

“The front portion of my apartment had smoke, water, the front the door and the windows had fire damage, but the back just had smoke damage,” said Emily Leinweber, apartment resident.

Emily says nothing of real value was affected in her apartment, and she is truly so thankful that she was away from home at the time.

“I’m thankful. I’m thanking God I wasn’t here last night,” said Leinweber. “I’m very thankful that my friends were down with me.”

KSN will continue to follow the investigation into the cause of the fire.
