Police identify victim in shooting north of downtown as 22-year-old Wichita man


Clarification: Police now tell KSN News Bennett is from Wichita and not Oklahoma

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Wichita police identified a 22-year-old man who was killed in a shooting Monday afternoon north of downtown. The victim is Braekwon Bennett of Wichita.

Police were dispatched to the 300 block of W. 10th Street around 5:25 p.m. for a shooting. After arriving they found Bennett with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to an area hospital, where he was
pronounced dead.

Officers learned that two an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy arrived at the apartment to confront Bennett. There was a fight that led to multiple shots being fired. The 18-year-old man was also shot and both suspects then left the apartment.

The suspects later arrived at an area hospital, where the 18-year-old man was admitted for treatment. The 17-year-old boy was contacted at the hospital and attempted to run from police but was taken into custody. The boy was booked into the Sedgwick County Juvenile Detention Facility on suspicion of first-degree murder. The 18-year-old man remains hospitalized and will be booked upon release.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.
