Trump: Intelligence chiefs ‘totally misquoted’

National / World

President Donald Trump is digging in on his demand for a border wall, telling the New York Times a bipartisan committee working to reach a deal on border security is a “waste of time.”

Democrats are offering billions of dollars for border security enhancements but not a wall.

The president told the Times he will likely bypass Congress altogether and declare a national emergency to get money to build the wall.

“I’ve set the table. I’ve set the stage for doing what I’m going to do,” Mr. Trump said.

He’s also standing his ground on a different front, insisting his intelligence chiefs did not contradict him during public Capitol Hill testimony, saying instead “They said they were totally misquoted. Taken out of context.”

During the stunning hearing, leaders of the nation’s intelligence agencies broke from the president in their assessment of everything from Russia, to North Korea to ISIS. All were identified as major threats, a sharp contrast to recent statements made by the president.

Missing from their report was any mention of a threat at the southern border.
