Arkansas leukemia patient ‘inspiration’ during hospital stay

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A Little Rock hospital is becoming a second home for a Hot Springs family after their son was diagnosed with leukemia.

For the past year, 10-year-old Max Boyce has spent every day at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

“For the longest time I couldn’t understand how could this be an inspiration,” said Max’s mom, Monique Huseby. “Now I really see that God works in mysterious ways.”

The family says Max’s hospital stay wasn’t meant to be long-term, but a complication with chemotherapy led to several setbacks that have kept him needing round-the-clock care.

“He went into multi-organ failure and it took 3 months of fighting on his part,” Huseby explained. “One day he’s feeling great and the next day he’s not.”

The family recently found out Max’s leukemia spread, so they’re planning for several more months away from home.

“He knew about his radiation and he was getting ready for it and he’s like, ‘Mom don’t worry. I got this.’ I’m just blown away,” Huseby said.

Max’s positive outlook through it all, isn’t the only thing surprising his parents. The Husebys say they never expected all the support from friends and neighbors in Hot Springs. After learning about Max’s diagnosis, the Husebys says their friends created the Mighty Max Facebook page to held coordinate meals, plan visits, and help the family pay for gas so they could stay with Max in Little Rock.

“When we started this we were really alone and it was really hard,” said Max’s dad Mark Huseby. “He doesn’t know the word quit. He won’t quit and it feeds us.”

Just like his next challenge, Max is taking every day in stride.

“What do you think of every one calling you a hero?” Huseby asked her son. “I like it,” Max replied.
