Operation Holiday prepares to move into new home

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Operation Holiday is preparing a new warehouse location, about a month before distribution.

Operation Holiday and Inter-Faith Ministries officials have been looking for a space to collect the donations and prepare for distribution.

“I’ve been looking for, with board members and others, since April,” said Ashley Davis, “and we thought we were really down to the wire and Ted called and said ‘hey, I think I got something for you.’ I got the best night’s sleep in months that night.”

Apex Engineering International is providing the space 1804 West Second Street, near Second and Vine.

Because the organization only needs the location for a couple of months a year, it can be a struggle to find a donated warehouse space large enough to accommodate up to 15,000 people, hundreds of thousands of pounds of food and volunteers.

“A lot of property owners who have those large spaces are not very warm to having temporary usages, it makes it doubly hard to find an acceptable space,” said Davis.

Now that Operation Holiday has secured the warehouse, they can start preparing it for the donations and distribution, which will be held December 15, 16 and 17.

For organizers, they’re relieved they can now focus on the mission: helping local families in need.

“They are just one increase utility bill or one unexpected medical or car expense away from not being able to make the rent or not being able to put groceries on the table,” said Davis.

The organization is also accepting applications for help. To find out how to click here.
