Part of Ridge Road closed after heat causes it to buckle

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The warm weather over the past few days caused part of Ridge Road to buckle Tuesday evening.

The Wichita Police Department was called to the 300 block of North Ridge Road, near Second Street and Brunswick just before 5 p.m.

When they arrived, they had found that the road had buckled, from curb to curb.

“With the heat we’ve had over the last several days and this being a warm day itself, we had some heat stress fatigue on a road,” said Alan King, Wichita Public Works & Utilities Director.

King says both Wichita Public Works crews and police shut down the road for a period of time to make temporary repairs to the damage.

“What we will do is anything that is sticking up, we will remove it so it isn’t an obstruction for traffic for people going over it, and anything that is a hole, we’ll fill up temporarily with temporary asphalt mix,” said King.

King says these kinds of repairs are costly, but that they are prepared if, and when it happens.

“Any repair like this is costly and mostly for us it’s materials, because we already have staff on payroll and it’s included in our normal operating budget,” said King.

King says they’ve made a temporary fix to the problem, drivers still need to be aware and cautious when driving through the area.

“Just that they need to be aware of the barricades and to be aware that it narrows down to one lane of traffic, that they give themselves enough following distance to be able to themselves and others safely through the restricted lane area,” said King.

One lane of going northbound and southbound is open right now.

As for a permanent fix to the road, King says the pavement will be removed on either side of the buckle, the material will be replaced and it’ll be re-paved.

KSN asked King if they have a time table on when the road would be fully opened back up, he says that’ll depend on how much work will have to go into repairing it.
