RUSSELL, Kan. (KSNW) — The condition of Russell’s fire chief has been upgraded following a fire and explosion at a garage on Friday. Chief Dylan Riedel’s condition was upgraded to good.

At 9:06 p.m., the Russell Fire Department responded to a garage fire in the 1700 block of N. Main St. Shortly after the crew arrived, a police officer reported an explosion and a firefighter injured.

Russell County EMS transported Riedel to a local hospital, and he was later transported to a burn unit in Wichita.

Crews contained the fire to the garage. An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.

The State Fire Marshal was contacted to assist in the investigation.
