HUTCHINSON, Kansas – Fifteen-year-old Sam Vonachen of Hutchinson pleaded not guilty Monday to two counts of premeditated first-degree murder.

Vonachen was arraigned Monday for allegedly setting the fire that killed his mother and 11-year-old sister back in 2013.

Authorities allege Vonachen used gasoline to ignite his family’s two-story Hutchinson home in September 2013, killing 11-year-old sister Audrey Vonachen and their mother, 47-year-old Karla Jo Vonachen.

Vonachen is also charged with the attempted murder of his father, plus aggravated arson.

Prosecutors say Vonachen used gasoline to start the home on fire to “send his family a message”.
