WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Westar Energy reported Wednsday afternoon a power outage that left part of northeast Wichita without electricity was due to a mechanical failure.

Westar said a failed bushing in a motor at a substation resulted the the outage. Westar declined to provide the location of the substation for security reasons.

The outage happened around 6 p.m. Tuesday and affected homes and traffic lights between Oliver and Webb and from Central to 29th Street North. All power was restored by midnight Tuesday.

At one time Tuesday evening, Westar’s outage map showed around 8,000 customers without power. The number slowly dropped to 4,300 in the evening. Power was restored overnight.

The equipment malfunction did cause a small fire at the substation which was under control quickly and did not injure anyone.
