Do you think KanCare should be expanded? Why or why not?

Absolutely. I live in Wellington. We lost our hospital in March of this year, just as the pandemic started. At least 6 rural Kansas hospitals have closed in the last 2 years. This was largely caused by the Legislature’s failure to pass KanCare (Medicaid) expansion for the last 6 years. This alone would provide over 100,000 working Kansans with the access to healthcare. Additionally it would create over 13,000 jobs according to a KSU study.

What is your stance on the legalization of medical marijuana?

Medical marijuana should be legalized. It’s been proven to help many people with such things as cancer, epilepsy and Alzheimer’s. Also, it is a proven analgesic and will significantly reduce the usage of narcotics.

Do you support any changes to abortion laws in Kansas? If so, what changes?

No. Improved access to healthcare, KanCare expansion, will reduce the number of abortions.

What are the issues you would address for farmers and ranchers?

We must resume trade with China and others and eliminate the harmful tariffs that have begun during this administration.

What are the key education issues in Kansas for K-12? For universities?

Funding. Teacher pay. Teacher job protections. We must get funding levels back to pre-Brownback levels.

Are you satisfied with DCF? With the foster care system?

DCF should have a top-down review to determine what changes must be made to protect our children.

What is your response to the Black Lives Matter movement?

Black Lives Matter period.

What do you think needs to be done to promote social and racial justice?

Not sure other than treating all people as individuals with the same rights without regard to race, color, creed, religion or sexual orientation.

Are you in favor of police reform? If so, what should it look like?

Depends on what that means since it means different things to different people. If it means replacing some officers with social workers, psychologists or other mental health professionals that might work. I would be willing to see this approach examined to see if it works.

Did you or do you support business shutdowns to control the spread of the coronavirus?

I would support shutting down bars especially, if necessary

Would you support another statewide shutdown if coronavirus cases continued to rise? If so, what are the factors that would lead you to that decision?

No, but I would support a statewide mask mandate with no opt-out.

What do you think should be done to help the Kansas economy recover?

Find a vaccine for the virus.

Would you cut money for social services if it means lower taxes? Would you favor higher taxes for more social services?

No, I would not support cutting social services for lower taxes. It would depend on what additional social services the tax hike would fund.

What should Kansas do to balance its budget? Will you support budget cuts for schools?

No budget cuts for schools. We need to increase taxes on higher earning individuals and corporations.
