Since Andover Central High School opened its doors back in 2001, the Jaguars basketball team had been to one state title game.
Saturday marked their second trip to the 5A state title game and they made the most of their opportunity.
Taking on Basehor-Linwood, it was a defensive battle much of the first half, with the Jaguars up 18 to 13 heading into halftime.
Andover Central was able to gain some separation in the second half and would come away with the 58 to 47 win.
“We got guys that bought into their role, even the guys on the bench have been tremendous all year, so basketball is a chemistry sport, and this team couldn’t have had better chemistry,” said Andover Head Coach Jesse Herrmann.
After the receiving their trophy after the game, the team, fellow students and fans celebrated on the court.
“”I can’t even explain it right now, I don’t think it has even hit me yet, it’s incredible,” said Braden Belt, senior guard.
The Jaguars first trip to the state title was in 2004.
