Denver Broncos select Bradley Chubb with 5th overall pick

Bradley Chubb and Von Miller are big fans of each other. Now they’re teammates, too.
Seven months after calling his team a bunch of softies, Broncos general manager John Elway picked one of the toughest players in the draft Thursday night in Chubb, the prolific edge rusher from North Carolina State.
Chubb was widely considered the top-ranked defensive player in the draft and he fell to Denver at No. 5 when the Cleveland Browns went with Ohio State defensive back Denzel Ward at 4, their second surprise pick of the night following their selection of quarterback Baker Mayfield with the top overall selection.
Chubb, who had 26 tackles for loss in 2017 despite constant attention, will team up with Miller, the Super Bowl 50 MVP who sorely missed DeMarcus Ware last year following Ware’s retirement.
Coming off a 5-11 season, the Broncos sorely needed a quarterback, a need they filled in free agency with the signing of Casey Keenum to a two-year, $36 million deal.
That left Elway with the option of bypassing this year’s deep class of promising but problematic  quarterbacks to grab a blue chipper at the top of his respective position group.
Miller said last week he’d love to have Chubb lining up next to him: “He’s Khalil Mack and Von Miller put together,” Miller said with a laugh.
“He is a great player and I would love to have him on my team. You don’t come across guys like that often,” Miller added. “We don’t (normally) have the No. 5 pick in the draft. I hope we don’t have a high pick like that for a while. So if we can steal a player like that, I’m all for it.”
The last time Elway picked this high was 2011 when he selected Miller with the second overall pick.
