The dream of a wrestling state championship is in on the minds of many teams across the state of Kansas.
On the first day of the KSHSAA Wrestling Tournament, you had several teams aiming for the top spot.
In the 6A and 5A divisions, both Goddard and Derby proved they are the teams to beat.
The Lions came in as the regional champs and brought 12 guys to state.
They finished the day dominating and will have seven coming back on Saturday for the finals.
“We wrestled seven of the top 20 teams in the country, and sometimes we did good, sometimes we did bad, but it got our kids mentally ready for this tournament,” said Brett Means, Goddard Wrestling Coach.
Senior Cayden Atkins is one of the seven Lions wrestlers competing for a title on Saturday.
“I’m really excited and ready to wrestle, I’ve been waiting for this all year, and probably since I was a freshman, just to be able to wrestle in the finals,” said Atkins.
So in 5A, Goddard ended the day with 190.5 points. Blue Valley Southwest is in second with 96.0 points.
In 6A, Derby finished with 139.0 points, followed by Manhattan with 131.0 points.
In the 4A tourney up in Salina, Both Pratt and Winfield are in the top five right now.
Winfield is currently in fourth place, with 67.0 points. Pratt is right behind them in fifth place with 62.0 points.
Over at Fort Hays State, the 3A/2A/1A tournament has Eureka in the top spot right now with 99.0 points.
State tournaments will resume Saturday morning.
