The Bishop Carroll Golden Eagles flew to similar heights in year one under head coach Dusty Trail last year, winning the 5-A state title against St. Thomas Aquinas.
The Golden Eagles have their sights set on reaching the mountain top again this season.
Trail, who has spent 24 years with Bishop Carroll, heads into his second season as the head man with many of his key cogs returning on offense.
Starting tackle Ethan McMillan and running back Jackson Nichols are back in the fold. Trail says Cade Becker will take over under center, replacing Braeden Howell.
The biggest name coming back, the top tight end in the state, Clay Cundiff. Cundiff has verbally committed to play for the Kansas Jayhawks following his senior season.
However, Trail is hoping some of the younger players on the defensive side of the ball will be ready to step up this season.
“We are rebuilding a little bit in the linebacker spot, Landon Zweistler got a little bit of playing time last year but got hurt game one, actually, against Northwest and was out for the season, but he’s coming back in good shape,” said Trail. “In the secondary, we are again kind of retooling things a little bit, but we’ve got some good talent back there,” added Trail.
Senior defensive end Brady Bockover is one of the returning starters on the defensive side of the ball and echoes the sentiment from his coach.
” They should fill in, not be scared to be the next player since they didn’t play last year, so they should just have a mind like a senior and just play the position,” said Bockover.
Bishop Carroll will open the 2018 season when they play host to Northwest on Friday, August 31.
